More Municipalities Consider Paid Sick Leave Ordinances

The New Jersey Working Families Alliance, and the unions that back the progressive group, hailed it as their first big victory on the issue. They built off that success last year by pressing their case all over the state, forcing local ballot measures and lobbying sympathetic politicians in town after town. Eight more communities, including Newark and Paterson, enacted similar ordinances.

Now, three additional municipalities-Elizabeth, New Brunswick and Princeton-could end up approving the same law.

In Elizabeth, the city council could not reach a quorum and was unable to take action by the constitutional deadline, automatically putting the measure on the November ballot.

If voters approve the proposal, it would mean the state's four largest cities would have earned sick time laws on the books. And, significantly for organized labor, it would subject all of Newark International Airport to the law since one of its three terminals is located in Elizabeth.

Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, the prime sponsor of a sick leave bill, said in a statement she has been working this summer to review concerns that have been raised by some stakeholders with the hopes of moving a bill through the Senate later this year.
