Paid Sick Leave

Trenton officials agreed March 13 to suspend enforcement of the city's law that took effect on March 11 requiring employers to provide paid sick days to employees.

The agreement with a coalition of state business groups puts a stop to the enforcement of the law until at least April 9 when the groups are set to appear before Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson, who signed an order codifying the agreement on Friday.

Minimum Wage Laws in Municipalities

Assembly Democrats Reed Gusciora (D-Trenton) and Sheila Oliver (D-East Orange) have introduced legislation that would allow New Jersey municipalities to set their own laws. A-3912 would allow local governments to increase minimum wages but no municipality would be permitted to enact a wage that is lower than New Jersey's current constitutionally protected minimum wage of $8.38 an hour. That wage is also adjusted annually based on the rate of inflation.

The bill is scheduled to be considered by The Assembly Labor Committee this month.
