On Monday November 9, 2015, Governor Christie announced his absolute veto of S-929 (Concerns certain workers' compensation supplemental benefits) which would have significantly increased private employers' workers' compensation expense ultimately by at least $58 million. NJSA and the staffing industry has been arguing against this bill ever since it was proposed.

We are convinced that the strong arguments offered by NJSA, the staffing industry, and the rest of the business community encouraged the Governor to make this decision. In his message to the Legislature, Governor Christie pointed out that "Employers in New Jersey already pay the third highest workers' compensation rates in the Nation... This bill represents a step in the wrong direction because an increase in the annual SIF (Second Injury Fund) surcharge would threaten the State's ability to keep existing employers in the State and undermine efforts to attract new ones. I cannot sign a bill that will pile yet another unacceptable financial burden on the businesses of this State."

If you sent a letter to Governor Christie... thank you! It was worth the effort!

Now that the general election is over, NJSA will watch the Legislature closely during the brief, but dangerous, lame duck session that will exist between now and early January.
