Good News for NJ's Staffing Firms

Governor Christie announced on May 12, 2016 that NJ's unemployment tax rates will be lower for New Jersey employers as of July 1, 2016. Each employer will receive a tax rate notice from the NJDOLWD specifying the firm's new rate over the next twelve months.  (Note a firm's tax rate is determined by the state's tax rate schedule and the employer's account experience.)  After numerous years of tax rate schedule increases to generate revenues to reduce the Unemployment Insurance Fund's deficit (went as high as $1.2 billion), and then build up the fund's balances to their current positive levels ($1.8 billion), the fund is now strong enough to allow the state to issue a lower tax rate schedule for the first time in years! 
The specific schedule being used by the state has not been announced but its use will be reflected in the tax notice that staffing firms will receive in the weeks to come.  Since unemployment taxes are a significant expense for temporary staffing firms, the positive impact of this reduction is higher proportionately for the staffing industry than other categories of employers.

In November 2010 New Jersey's voters approved a constitutional amendment preventing state government from diverting taxpayer funds from the Unemployment and Temporary Disability Funds after the state had diverted $5.4 billion of those funds for other uses during previous administrations.
