Governor Christie Vetoes Minimum Wage Bill

On Tuesday, August 30, 2016, Governor Chris Christie announced his veto of A-15 which would have increased NJ's current minimum wage from $8.38 to $15 per hour over the 2017 - 2021 period. In his press release the Governor said the bill "fails to consider the capacity of businesses, especially small businesses, to absorb the substantially increased labor costs it will impose, killing jobs and erasing gains of more than 275,000 private sector jobs since 2010." He pointed out how other states and cities saddled with a $15 minimum wage are "already seeing those negative economic impacts, from fewer jobs to increased costs for goods and services on college campuses, in restaurants and in the manufacturing sector."

State Legislative leaders have already filed a bill (SCR1500) that will propose a constitutional amendment to be voted on by the electorate in 2017 that would raise the state minimum wage to $15 over a period of years. With the Governor's veto of A-15, Assembly and Senate democratic leaders are now pursuing this approach. Certainly this subject will also be argued during the gubernatorial election in 2017. For this measure to be included on the ballot it would have to be approved by the Legislature in both 2016 and 2017 and does not need the Governor's approval.

The Legislative "summer recess" is almost over. Once the state addresses the Transportation Funding issue, the other legislative proposals that were reported on during the first part of 2016, and new ones, will once again take "center stage."
