Affordable Care Act Insurance Rates Rise 5% in NJ

New Jersey consumers who buy health coverage through the Affordable Care Act can expect a 5% increase next year in the popular benchmark plan - less than the average for the 37 states that use, and a slower rate of increase than private employers have seen.
In Bergen and Passaic counties, a 25-year-old will pay $255 monthly before tax credits for the lowest-premium silver plan. A 45-year-old will pay $367 and a 55-year-old $567, before tax credits, for that coverage. Silver plans are the most popular level of insurance and cover an average of 70% of health expenses.
The ACA third open-enrollment period began on November 1st, the government posted the plans online Monday afternoon, allowing consumers to "window-shop" for their 2016 health coverage.
Nationally, significant increases in premiums had been feared after insurers in some states asked earlier in the year to raise rates up to 54 percent. In New Jersey, three plans that cover more than half of the current Obamacare customers had asked for increases of more than 10 percent. Insurers said the increases were necessary because people who had bought plans were sicker than expected. 19 states will see double-digit increases for their benchmark plans. New Jersey's increase of 5% for 2016 is less than the average of 7.5 % for the 37 states that use Premiums had stayed virtually flat in New Jersey for 2015, compared with the Affordable Care Act's first open enrollment
